Mission
Statement
The Aboriginal Literacy Foundation is a charitable
Not-for-Profit Foundation established to provide for the literacy needs of
the most disadvantaged, marginalized and isolated Indigenous Australians
living in rural and remote communities. The Foundation seeks to improve the
poor literacy level amongst Indigenous Australians, as with the life
expectancy is approximately a third lower than European Australians.
It is only through improving literacy skills that Indigenous Australians
will have a greater opportunity to complete further education or secure
employment. The correlation between literacy levels and rates of anti
social behaviour and criminal activity is well known in both the
non-Indigenous and Indigenous community. The greatest single benefit
we can provide for Aboriginal Australians outside health and longevity is
literacy.
